Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

a Montessori approach to Catholic faith formation which provides children a sacred space to: hear the Good News, encounter Christ the Good Shepherd and prepare for full participation in our Catholic community.

The Atrium

“Atrium” means entry-way into the Church. This atrium is designed to introduce the children to Jesus through presentations on scripture and liturgy that lead them to prayer. Here is our entryway into the atrium where the children hang up their coats and prepare to enter into a space where they can listen to God.

Hands-on materials in the Atrium are connected to life of Jesus Christ and his teachings help to make the mystery of God concrete for children. The Atrium is a place where children have an experience of life, an education in faith, and a celebration of the encounter with all three persons of the Trinity.

Catechists are required to attend a certification training through CGSUSA. Certification begins at level 1 (for ages 3-6) and then builds into level 2 (for ages 6-9) and level 3 (ages 9-12). Certification for level 1 is an in-person 90 hour training course.

Catechist Aides assist the catechist in creating a prayerful, peaceful environment in the atrium. Aides help the children with small tasks and assist them in their work of deepening their relationship with God.

“I am on a journey to encounter Him and He is on a journey to encounter me, and when we meet one another we see that the great surprise is that He was seeking me before I began seeking Him.”
